Strategic Listening

چکیده
We consider a cheap talk setting with two senders and a continuum of receivers with different preferences. Receivers listen to just one sender, but can choose which sender to listen to. We determine that: (i) strategic listening facilitates more informative communication, such that even senders with strong preferences may report truthfully; (ii) both senders can attract listeners only if they are oppositional and not too polarized; and (iii) senders with preferences that are closer to those of a representative receiver (i.e., the average receiver preference) are listened to by a greater proportion of receivers. When senders strategically select their preference parameters to maximize the proportion of receivers who listen, both senders choose the average receiver’s preference. However, when senders have to choose preferences before they learn the distribution of receiver preferences, they may choose non-central preferences.

Several strategic questions are raised to explore the possibility of integrating these listening...
متن کاملStrategic Competence and Foreign Language test Performance in Iranian Context
A number of studies have accounted the integral role of foreign/second language learning and learner strategy use. However, a few of these studies have considered the relationships between strategic competence and its use and foreign language performance (FLP). This study applied structural equation modeling to deeply investigate the relationships between test takers’ strategy use and their per...

متن کاملDeveloping students' listening metacognitive strategies using online videotext self-dictation-generation learning activity
The study is based on the use of a flexible learning framework to help students improve information processes underlying strategy instruction in EFL listening. By exploiting the online videotext self-dictation-generation (video-SDG) learning activity implemented on the YouTube caption manager platform, the learning cycle was emphasized to promote metacognitive listening development. Two theorie...
